Estimator (Construction)

Job description:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Concrete Estimator to join our preconstruction team. This role is designed for professionals with up to five years of experience who can independently prepare competitive and negotiated estimates for a wide variety of concrete construction projects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, confident in performing quantity takeoffs, and capable of assembling complete bid proposals. This position plays a vital role in supporting our pursuit of new work and ensuring the accuracy and competitiveness of our bids.

Job qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2–7 years of experience in concrete or structural estimating, preferably with commercial, industrial, or heavy civil projects.

  • Proficient in reading construction documents, including structural and architectural plans.

  • Strong knowledge of concrete construction methods, labor productivity, and formwork systems.

  • Experience using estimating tools such as Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff (OST), PlanSwift, or similar.

  • Strong communication, organization, and analytical skills.

  • Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend etc)

Key Responsibilities:

1. Estimating & Proposal Development

  • Prepare complete and detailed estimates for concrete work, including foundations, slabs, walls, structural elements, and specialty concrete.

  • Develop pricing based on quantity takeoffs, crew rates, productivity factors, and vendor/supplier quotes.

  • Analyze drawings, specifications, and contract documents to determine project requirements and scope.

2. Quantity Takeoffs

  • Perform and review accurate quantity takeoffs using digital takeoff software.

  • Ensure takeoffs align with contract documents and identify any scope gaps or inconsistencies.

  • Support in breaking down scopes for trade packages and work categories.

3. Bid Strategy & Coordination

  • Support the development of bid strategies for competitive and negotiated work.

  • Collaborate with project managers and executives to identify risks, opportunities, and bid clarifications.

  • Develop and present bid summaries, cost breakdowns, and scopes of work for internal review.

4. Subcontractor & Vendor Engagement

  • Solicit bids and pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and specialty vendors.

  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals for scope coverage, exclusions, and pricing accuracy.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key subcontractors and suppliers.

5. Preconstruction & Cost Analysis

  • Assist in early project budgeting, conceptual estimating, and historical cost benchmarking.

  • Support design-build and design-assist efforts with cost modeling and system comparisons.

  • Provide estimating input for value engineering, project phasing, and constructability reviews.

6. Documentation & Team Collaboration

  • Maintain organized estimate files, assumptions, and historical data for future use.

  • Collaborate with operations, project management, and field teams during pre-bid and project handoff phases.

  • Assist in training junior estimators and interns on takeoffs, pricing strategies, and systems.
